Robin Koffler - General Manager“Dear Daryl and Leo, Thanks very much for yesterday. Steve was very impressed. I am hoping to go to site next week and hope to place an order soon. You both again demonstrated what makes us so confident in recommending Riello.”

When we get comments like these from a power reseller we know we are doing good work. Robin Koffler - General Manager - UK subsidiary Riello UPS Ltd.

Fuel Cells Review

Monday, February 13th, 2006

Fuell Cell ReviewThis is an interesting on-line magazine that gives information on the fundamental scientific, engineering and technology challenges confronting hydrogen and fuel-cell professionals. It sources include industry experts and academia from the hydrogen and fuel cell areas.

What magazines like Fuel Cell Review demonstrate is that this side of the power quality industry is in its infancy but as we know technologies can rapidly advance when governments fund them, give them good tax incentives and markets quickyl adopt the products. Cost of ownership, power output and perhaps our apparent mental images of hydrogen as an explosive element are current barriers to fuel cell technology adoption.

Power Failure Contingency Plans

IC Berkshire LogoThis story follows on from the other ones we have shown which highlight how local councils respond to power failures. Bracknell Forest Borough Council recently experienced a hugh power failure due to a local sub-station fault. The power failure affected workers and homes alike but was brough under control fairly quickly thanks to the council’s business continuity plans.

Even though the plan brought the council back on-line the next day there is no doubt that the deployment of uninterruptible power supplies and generators would have helped the council to run throughout the power down and ensure that services remained on-line.

Photovoltaic Power Supplies

Photo Voltaic Solar EnergySolar panels are increasing in both their installation numbers and applications. As a device that converts solar energy into electricity there could well be a case for a UPS application where most of the energy that is used to charge the battery set and powers the UPS itself comes from roof-top mounted solar energy panels. OK this is pretty far fetched at the moment but we are only talking problems of scale and efficiency before this could become a reality. Go back twenty years in the power protection field and in that time a 1kVA on-line UPS has come down in size and cost by around 80%. This website from Siemens Solar provides some useful background information on how Phot Voltaic cells work.

Climate Care And SoHo UPS

Climate CareThis website looks at what we can do to reduce cardbon emissions and offers some useful insights. They reckon that 8% of electricity wasted in the home is down to equipment left on standby. Many SoHo applications now require an uninterruptible power supply to ensure that they can continue to function during power breaks and the Plug Dialog is ideal for such systems. I view it as a filtered socket strip with a built-in UPS. The nice thing is that it also gives a central control point to switch on or off all those applications.
