Solar panels are increasing in both their installation numbers and applications. As a device that converts solar energy into electricity there could well be a case for a UPS application where most of the energy that is used to charge the battery set and powers the UPS itself comes from roof-top mounted solar energy panels. OK this is pretty far fetched at the moment but we are only talking problems of scale and efficiency before this could become a reality. Go back twenty years in the power protection field and in that time a 1kVA on-line UPS has come down in size and cost by around 80%.
